If someone came to you, whether you asked or not, and told you how you could solve a problem, could you hear what they had to say? I mean really hear them? Not just with your ears but rather with the open-mindedness it takes to grasp what they’re trying to share. I’m not suggesting that all advice, solicited or unsolicited, is worth considering or adopting. But what about the advice that is? Can you distinguish the difference? Or, are you someone who thinks you’ve already got everything figured out even though you’re stuck in one spot?
Getting to any goal or desired outcome is a process. If how you are going about it isn’t producing progress, the biggest turning point could come by a change in thinking and approach…by you. As an expert who understands the process of achievement, and more specifically, where it breaks down, there are many people who desire a good outcome but can’t seem to hear the advice that will help them get to their goal. Without knowing what to do, and of course - doing it, many people merely shoot in the dark. And if they don’t get lucky, they often get mad.
For high achievers, it starts out the same. Something goes wrong. Obstacles pop up, people don’t cooperate, there’s not enough time, or money, or someone gets sick, or they do and they don’t know what to do. However, what these top producers do next isn’t something that everyone else does. They start looking for answers. They anxiously seek a solution. They are open and receptive and want to kick ideas around - not kick them all out. Because they are looking, they see ones that others miss. This difference is the difference between success and failure. The real fight for a fix, for many, isn’t on the outside. It’s the one that occurs within.
People caught up in hopeless thinking mistakenly believe their perspective is right and that it’s others who don’t understand. But that’s not all. They’re missing something else…something even bigger. What they don’t realize is that the major impact of their negative point of view is going to be on them - AND THEIR RESULTS. Negativity sabotages our own success by keeping us from feverishly seeking a solution. It brings the process of achievement to a dead halt. It operates like a self-fulfilling prophecy and can falsely make obstacles appear to be the culprit. If pessimists only realized…surely they would think twice.
In every challenge there exists the possibility of failure. The potential to rise higher and wiser exists as well. Done right, on the other side we can feel exuberant and powerful. Emerging from a monumental challenge, many people have stated they’d do it again, given the choice. It’s because of the wisdom gained and the amazing insights learned. It’s truly transformational - in a good way. This place, however, has a barrier to entry - it requires the right attitude. It’s the prerequisite for greater success. People with a negative outlook are technically opting out. They are refusing to participate in this amazing journey and normal life event and choosing to stagnate (and blame the obstacles) instead.
There is an upward pull to move everyone towards discovering what they really can achieve. However, at the end of the day, attitude is a choice and that choice comes with consequences. I have discovered for those who cannot figure out, or hear, what they need to do, it is consequence that takes over as teacher.
The best advice I can give you is - to know when to listen. Even…when it’s something you don’t want to hear. Before being quick to shrug off words of wisdom, here are a few pointers that might help you know when to pay close attention:
1. Have you been in this situation or in one similar before? 2. Does the advice-giver fully understand your problem? 3. Has the advice-giver achieved good results by applying their own words of wisdom? .._______________________________________
